Tower Lifeboat Station is a new-build replacement lifeboat station located on the River Thames, in front of the Grade I Listed Somerset House and alongside Waterloo bridge. It is the RNLI’s busiest station. Designed to support rapid, 24/7 emergency response, the facility provides modern operational spaces including a casualty care landing area, crew accommodation, and a visitor engagement space. The layout prioritises efficiency and safety, ensuring swift crew deployment and the safe transfer of casualties to the embankment for onward care.
The building features zinc cladding and an alternating pitched roof form, reducing visual mass while optimising orientation for photovoltaic panels.
The modular structure was fabricated in Hull and assembled at King George V Dock on a purpose-built pontoon transported from Appledore Docks. The completed station was delivered by river to its operational location and secured to new piles that were driven into the river bed.
